Keeping Us Busy- Modern Day Gladiators

Recently, my husband and I were watching the awesome movie Gladiator, staring the super talented Russell Crowe. It was during one of the gruesome Colosseum scenes that I discussed with Jon the ancient Romans, and the horrid side of human nature that finds spectacles like the gladiator games entertaining. But what really struck us was the scene in which bread is thrown to the starving masses. We began discussing how the gladiator games were most popular amongst the poor and destitute, and how it served as a distraction from how crappy of a deal they were getting, especially in comparison to their "noble leaders". It was then that I had an "Ah Ha" moment. The poor in America are the same as the poor in ancient Rome. Our modern day dramas like celebrity gossip, the spectacle that was the Casey Anthony Trial, and the train wreck that is reality TV  all serve as modern day gladiator games that keep us entertained and occupied while we keep getting crapped on. I'm sure several of you have never heard of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2012, but briefly it allows for indefinite detention of anyone perceived to be a terrorist, associated with a terrorist, or supporting terrorist groups without trial. Even if these people are American citizens, and even if they are on American soil, the government can now lock you up forever. Bye-Bye Fifth Amendment, hello Detention camps. Now obviously this is a huge deal!! But do you know what the main stories on Yahoo!s page is? A joke Bill Maher cracked about Tim Tebow, latest Kardashian gossip, and the celeb splits of the year. Not anywhere on the main page, or the following page was this act even mentioned. I am not trying to sound like one of those crazy, paranoid, the government is brainwashing us psychos, but dosen't it seem a bit odd that the whole world halts when Michael Jackson dies, yet no one notices while the greatest country in the world has its foundation ripped to shreds? We are no better than the poor Romans who lavished in bloodshed and violence to take their minds off their hunger. Now quit reading this blog, the new Jersey Shore is about to start.
